Here are 2 box set plays from Illinois Head Coach John Groce. Groce just completed his 2nd season as head coach for the Fighting Illini. He was the head coach at Ohio and served as an assistant for Ohio State, Xavier, Butler, and NC State before taking over for the Illini in 2012. In his last year at Ohio, the Bobcats finished 29-8 and made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
John Groce Illinois Fighting Illini Box Set Plays – Box 1
In Box 1, 5 screens down for 3 who pops out to the wing for a pass from 1. Once 3 has the ball, 2 cuts to the ball-side corner. 3 looks to pass inside to 5 posting up first, then looks for 1 cutting off of a back-cut from 4. If neither are open, 4 steps over to set a ball-screen for 3. If 3 doesn’t have a shot and 4 isn’t there on the roll, 3 kicks it out to 1 who then gets a ball-screen from 5. If neither have a shot, 1 looks to pass to 4 cutting to the high post. If 4 gets the ball he looks to shoot or pass hi/lo to 5.
John Groce Illinois Fighting Illini Box Set Plays – Box 2
In this play, 5 screens down for 3 who pops out to the wing while 2 cuts to the wing on the opposite side. 1 passes to 3 then cuts through to the corner. Once 3 has the ball, 5 screens across for 4. 4 looks for a shot but if he isn’t open he continues his cut to screen for 3 on the ball. 3 drives middle as 4 rolls. If 4 isn’t open, 3 passes to 5 stepping out. 5 dribbles toward 2 and gives the ball to him on a dribble hand-off. Once 2 has the ball, 4 cuts off of a staggered screen from 1 and 5. If the stagger cut isn’t open, 2 looks to pass to 1 in the corner off of a screen from 3.
