Ed Cooley Providence Friars Set Plays
Attached are two set plays from Providence Head Coach Ed Cooley. Before taking over for Providence, Cooley served as the Head Coach at Fairfield for 5 years. In that span, he increased the team’s win total each year and finished 1st in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2011. Before becoming a head coach, he served as an assistant at Boston College, Rhode Island, Stonehill, and UMass-Dartmouth. He was awarded the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year in 2010 and the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2011.
Ed Cooley Providence Friars Set Plays – 2-1-2 Center Option
In this play, 1 passes to 4 who passes to 2 on the wing. 5 sets a screen for 1 who cuts into the lane looking for a pass from 2. 4 makes a shallow cut to the ball-side corner. If 1 isn’t open, 5 steps out and gets the pass from 2. 5 reverses the ball to 3. 1 sets a screen for 2, then cuts up off of a down screen from 5. 3 looks to pass to 2 or 1 for a shot. If 1 gets the ball, 5 can also set a ball-screen. 1 and 5 play a pick & roll two-man game as 2 replaces 5 on the roll.
Ed Cooley Providence Friars Set Plays – Horns Triple Stagger
1 dribbles left as 5 and 4 set a staggered screen for 2. 1 passes to 2. 2 looks to shoot, but if he doesn’t have a shot he looks to pass to 3 cutting to the wing off of a staggered screen from 4 and 5. If 3 doesn’t have a shot, 4 and 5 set a third staggered screen for 1 cutting to the ball-side corner.
