Mike Fratello Ukraine Offense

Attached in this playbook are two plays from Ukraine National basketball team Head Coach Mike Fratello. Ukraine went 2-3 in group play in the 2014 FIBA World Cup, but the team has come a long way since Fratello took over the coaching duties in 2011. He previously coached in the NBA as Head Coach of the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Memphis Grizzlies. Fratello ranks 19th in most games coached in the NBA with 1,215 games. He won over half of those winning 667 games in his career. Fratello wasn’t the only American on the Ukrainian side for the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Ukraine also recruited former Sacramento Kings player Pooh Jeter to be the starting point guard. Jeter played in China for the Shandong Lions, and has played overseas since 2007. He had a short stint in the NBA during the 2010-2011 season.

2014 FIBA World Cup: Mike Fratello Ukraine Offense – Stack Zipper:
In this play, the point guard dribbles to the right wing as 2 makes a zipper cut off of 5. 1 passes to 2. Once 2 has the ball, he looks to pass to 3 curling around a screen from 4 or to 1 cutting back-door off of a screen from 5. If neither 2 nor 3 are open, they continue to opposite wings off of second screens from the post men. If 1 gets the ball on the wing, 5 moves over to set a ball-screen. 1 drives middle as 5 rolls, 4 clears, and 2 & 3 spot-up on the perimeter.

2014 FIBA World Cup: Mike Fratello Ukraine Offense – SLOB Stagger:
1 screens for 4 and 3 passes the ball inbounds to 4 at the top of the key. Once 4 has the ball, 5 sets a screen for 3. 3 cuts to the basket looking for the pass from 4. If 3 isn’t open, 1 curls around 4 taking the ball on a dribble hand-off. 4 and 5 then set a staggered pin down screen for 2 in the corner. 1 looks to pass to 2 for a shot or to 5 cutting to the basket after the screen.
