Tony Bennett Virginia Offense by Wes Kosel
Here are some set plays used by Coach Tony Bennett. I originally saw these plays used for Joe Harris when he was there as a Cavalier.
Tony Bennett Virginia Offense – Baseline Screen
The play starts with Harris in the corner (2). 1 passes to 3 then makes a flare cut to the wing off of a screen from 5. 4 steps in to set a screen for Harris running the baseline. If Harris doesn’t have a shot, 3 will clear out leaving room for Harris and the power forward to play a two-man game.
Tony Bennett Virginia Offense – Baseline Run
1 passes to 3 then cuts around 5 and 4 to the opposite wing. This is to get the defender moving and possibly score off of the initial cut to the basket. 3 passes to 2 (Harris) who reverses the ball to 1. Once Harris has passes the ball to 1, he makes a cut around the low post to the corner looking for a shot. If he isn’t open, 1 dribbles toward the top of the key and passes to 3. While 1 is dribbling, 5 steps across the lane and screens for Harris running the baseline. 3’s first option is to pass to Harris but also has 4 cutting off of a down screen from 1. If neither option is open, 4 screens the ball and 3 looks to penetrate and kick.
Tony Bennett Virginia Offense – Baseline Pass
1 dribbles toward the wing and hesitates to make the defenders think that he is going to give a dribble hand-off to 3. 1 continues to dribble toward the baseline and if he can get around his man looks to score. If not, he can pass to 2 (Harris) who should be open in the corner off of a back-screen from 4.
