KU World University Games Playbook by Wes Kosel
Here are six plays used by Team USA in the Gold Medal Match of the World University Games against Germany. The playbook includes three man to man sets, one zone quick hitter, and two baseline out-of-bounds plays.
KU represented the US with help from both an SMU and FGCU player. Team USA went 8-0 coached by Bill Self and won the Gold Medal by beating Germany in double overtime.
KU World University Games Playbook – High PNR Post ISO
1 dribbles to the left off of a high ball-screen from 4. 5 ducks in looking for the quick post entry pass from 1. 4 rolls on the screen and can get a pass from 5 at the block if open.
KU World University Games Playbook – Zipper Post ISO
5 screens for 1 as 4 sets a zipper screen for 2. 1 passes to 2 then cuts into the lane. 4 turns around to screen for 2. As 2 drives middle, 5 sets a down-screen for 3. If nothing is open towards the middle, 2 turns and looks to pass to 4 posting up on the right block.
KU World University Games Playbook – Transition Pop
4 runs in transition ahead of 1 but turns around to set a rear ball-screen. 1 drives baseline as 4 pops for a shot.
KU World University Games Playbook – Zone Baseline Lob
1 passes to 2 as 5 screens across the zone for 4. 4 screens the bottom zone defender leaving space for 3 to cut to the basket for a lob. If the lob isn’t there, 5 screens the outside defender as 3 cuts to the corner for a shot.
KU World University Games Playbook – Box Flat Flex
3 and 2 cut from the elbows to the corners. 1 passes to 4 then sets a flex-screen for 3. 4 passes to 5 then sets a down-screen for 1.
KU World University Games Playbook – Box Flat Counter Lob
3 and 2 cut from the elbows to the corners. 1 fakes the pass to 4 as 5 sets a back-screen. 1 looks to make the lob pass to 4 or pass to 5 diving to the rim.
