Dave Rose BYU Cougars Offense

Dave Rose BYU Cougars Offense by Wes Kosel

Attached in this playbook are three plays from BYU Cougars head coach Dave Rose. Rose just completed his 10th season as head coach of the cougars. In the first 9 years, he compiled a 232-78 record with no losing seasons. The Cougars have made it to the NCAA Tournament 7 of the last 9 years. The Cougars had a lot of offensive firepower, with four players averaging over 13 points per game. Earlier this Spring, the Cougars ranked 2nd in the country in points per game (84.0), 4th in assists per game (17.1), and 17th in rebound per game (38.8). In these offensive plays, you will see how BYU scores using multiple actions to stretch out the defense.

Dave Rose BYU Cougars Offense – Side Screen Weak Stagger
In this play, 1 dribbles towards the left wing and passes to 3. 4 moves in from the trailer spot and screens across the free-throw line for 5. 5 cuts straight into a side ball-screen for 3. As 3 is driving middle, he first looks to turn the corner and score. If he can’t score, he looks to pass to 5 on the roll or to 2 cutting off of a staggered screen from 1 and 4.

Dave Rose BYU Cougars Offense – Side Screen Weak Flare
1 passes to 2 then cuts off of 4 at the elbow down to the block. 4 steps out to set a ball-screen for 2. 2 drives middle as 4 rolls, 1 replaces, and 5 sets a flare screen for 3 on the weak side. 2 looks to score or pass to 4 or 3 for a shot.

Dave Rose BYU Cougars Offense – DHO Ball Screen Offense
1 dribbles to the wing and gives 3 the ball on a dribble hand-off. 5 steps out to set a ball-screen for 3. If 3 can’t get anything on the ball-screen, he passes to 4 as an outlet. 4 then dribbles towards 2 and gives him the ball on a dribble hand-off. 5 steps out to screen for 2, and the offense continues with this pattern until a scoring opportunity opens up.
