Jim Larranaga Miami Hurricanes Horns Hi/Lo Options by Wes Kosel
Attached are 2 hi/lo options out of the horns set from Coach Jim Larranaga. Larranaga just led his Miami Hurricanes to 17 wins which is the 3rd straight winning season for the Hurricanes. A 30 year coaching veteran, Larranaga has 536 wins in his career. Before coaching the Hurricanes, Larranaga coached at American International, Bowling Green, and George Mason. He led George Mason to 13 straight winning seasons and to the 2006 Final Four as a #11 seed. During that tournament run, George Mason upset Michigan State, North Carolina, and #1 seed Connecticut.
In these 2 options from the horns set, Larranaga uses a staggered ball-screen to start each option. Option 1 uses a pick-and-roll into a hi/lo look and Option 2 uses a flare screen before the hi/lo entry.
Jim Larranaga Miami Hurricanes Horns Hi/Lo Options – Option 1
In option 1, 1 dribbles to the left wing to set his defender up for the staggered ball-screen from 4 and 5. As 1 clears the screen, 4 rolls to the basket. 1 looks to pass to 4 for a lay-up or dunk, but if he isn’t open 5 screens down for 3 who cuts to the top of the key for a shot. Once 3 has the ball, he looks first for the shot but if that isn’t open he dribbles to the left wing and looks to pass inside to 5 posting up. If 5 isn’t open 4 flashes to the elbow. 3 passes to 4 who looks to make the hi/lo pass to 5.
Jim Larranaga Miami Hurricanes Horns Hi/Lo Options – Option 2
Option 2 starts the same as Option 1 with 1 dribbling to the left wing then off of the staggered ball-screen from 4 and 5. Instead of 4 rolling to the basket, he sets a flare screen for 5. 5 flares to the wing looking for a shot. If he isn’t open he screens down for 3 just as in option 1. 3 gets the ball and the play is ran the same as option 1 from here. 3 dribbles to the wing and looks inside to 5. 4 flashes to the elbow who looks hi/lo to 5.
